Recovery Day/Silent Disco

To celebrate the end of Recovery Month, we wanted to put on a celebration event for our
members in recovery. We spoke to members in our members meetings and encouraged
them to make suggestions about what they wanted the event to be.
One of those suggestions was a silent disco. Initially we were apprehensive because of the
cost of an event like this, but in typical fashion, we wanted to investigate this as we believe in
the principles of co- production. Through our search and contacts, we were able to find a
service ‘The Good Times Project’, who were willing to support our event.
We have regularly held events and included ‘bonkers bingo’. This is bingo with a twist – you
do not want people to be silent! When a certain number is called, a song will be played that
relates to that number, which you then hope will encourage people to get up and dance. This
has been very well received and was requested for this event. We also decided to offer a
buffet to those in attendance.
Being a recovery event, we wanted people to stand in front of the audience to talk about
their recovery so that we could celebrate their achievements.
We now had an event idea, suggested by our members. We decided to put in an application
to the Peer-led Initiative Fund for £195 to cover the cost of the silent disco and for travel, so
that members from North Northants could attend the event, which was being held in
Northampton. The application was approved and so we went ahead with the event.
This event was a huge success.
We had many people who bravely stood in front of a crowd of over 70 people to proudly talk
about their recovery. It was hugely inspiring and encouraging to all, whatever their stage of
recovery. Peer support is very important and has a huge impact on the success of someone
achieving their recovery goals. There was a common theme of people talking about
connections and relationships. Well done to all who spoke!
We had some food together, then onto the bingo, which went as well as it usually does with
a long conga line breaking out at one stage. Sarah and Grace have this event locked down
now!
On to the silent disco. John from The Good Times Project was our host, and what a fantastic
host he was. With a silent disco, each person has a set of headphones. On these
headphones is a switch which you can put on red, green or blue. Each colour has a different
song being played by John. We opted for 80’s, 90’s and Motown music, giving people the
choice of which song they wanted to listen to. It’s interesting to see people dancing along to
different music, and you regularly see people saying to each other to change to the song
they’re listening to. Lots of singing by all (some good, some not so good but we don’t care,
it’s about having fun!)
What was most interesting about this event was how comfortable people were to get up and
dance, taking many people out of their comfort zone. People who would usually be reluctant
to take part in something like this, suddenly found themselves up and dancing, with big
smiles everywhere!
Huge thanks to John at The Good Times Project, we’re sure we’ll see you again soon given
the amount of requests to do it all again!

John Clare Museum

Bridge members that attend our weekly poetry group, recently thanks to the Peer-Led Initiative Fun enjoyed a day out at the John Clare Museum, at Helpston near Oundle. We found out more about one of Northamptonshire’s most famous sons, his history and his poetry. Plus we had a lovely day out. If you are interested in Poetry then why not come to our group at 11am one Tuesday in Northampton. If you can’t make it in person the group also runs on Zoom and can be accessed through our Online Timetable.

Adult Learning

At Bridge we have many sessions put on in Collaboration with Adult Learning – Northamptonshire.
Every Month We have various sessions across all 3 sites.
Congratulations to our members in Wellingborough, who completed their Air Fryer Cooking Class this Month! Members have been engaging in a course, learning to cook budget friendly meals in an Air Fryer.
Did you know you can make cake in an air fryer?! It was delicious! On completion of the course they got their very own Air Fryer to continue to develop the skills they have learnt!
In Corby. We had sessions on Emotional Resilience which was really enjoyed, and also How to get a good nights sleep where Members learnt tips and techniques from Natalie to help them drift off easily and have a good quality sleep.
The members really enjoyed these all and engaged really well.
Thanks for more great sessions guys!

Equine Therapy

Members from Northampton had the best day out at Live Love Be Equine Therapy.
It looks like an amazing day was had!
Here’s what the member had to say…
“We picked a great day to go to Equine Therapy. The weather was absolutely beautiful, and although a bit muddy, we all enjoyed some sunshine.
When we first arrived, we received a really warm welcome, which really helped a lot of the members who were experiencing anxiety.
We all had a cup of tea or coffee and settled into the day whilst Emma (the host) explained everything, including what to do and not to do around the animals.
We made our way out into one of the paddocks to meet all of the horses, then after about an hour, we brought the horses into the stables where we all had the chance to get to know the horses, groom them, and relax in their company.
Everyone seemed to enjoy this time (and quiet), and all were smiling.
Some of the members were quite skeptical about the day, they didn’t know what to expect and didn’t feel that it would be therapeutic, however afterwards, they all expressed how amazing the day had been and that they all loved the experience.
We had lunch in the Magical Forest around a campfire, and following this we went back to the barn where we created our own personal mandalas, and then had the opportunity to spend time with our chosen horse on a one to one basis. Everyone really loved this part of the day, including the two members of staff who had come to support us all.
Once the day came to an end, we all wanted to stay a little longer, but once we had left and arrived back at Bridge, everyone was happy, relaxed, grateful and smiling, even those who were skeptical. Everyone has said that given the chance, they would all jump at the chance to do it again.
Personally, I am really proud of the day that I arranged through the peer led fund, and it was a strange but very nice sensation to have everyone thanking me for arranging it. I do not take positive comments well, but it made me feel incredibly proud that I could make such a positive impact on all of these peoples’ day, and it has boosted my confidence a lot.”

Animals In Need

Another amazing Peer Led day out on 22nd October.
A group of Northampton members hopped on a minibus and journeyed across to Irchester, where they spent the day at Animals In Need Northamptonshire .
It was a beautiful day, blue sky and sunshine, and all those who attended had their heart stolen by at least one of the animals at the centre.
But it was hard work, cleaning kennels, walking the dogs, mucking out the horses, and it really made us all appreciate just how much effort goes into the care of the animals every single day!
Of course, we got to play with many of the animals as well, and the smiles on everyones faces just made the day that much more special.
I think we all want to say a huge thank you to the staff and volunteers for having us, and I am sure we will return in the future.
Oh, and we hope that the blankets, toys, food, and dog beds that we donated go some way to helping.

Meditation Centre

On October 24th a group of members visited the Nagajuna Kadampa Meditation Centre as a peer led activity arranged by one of our members in Northampton.
Here is what they had to say about the day:
“We arrived at Nagarjuna Kadampa Meditation Centre where we were greeted by Pet. We were taken to the meditation centre, which was very quiet and you instantly felt so relaxed. We began the day with a guided meditation, leaving us feeling calm and peaceful. Many members said how beneficial the guided meditation was, as when meditating alone it can be difficult to stay focused and get distracted by your own thoughts. By being guided through the meditation it kept members more focused and present.
After being told about the meditation room, we were set on a history tour and shown around the beautiful grounds. The historic manor house had a long history, owned by many families and was even a school between 1985 – 2016. Our tour guide was brilliant and seemed to know everything about the building, this was a great history lesson! The building had been extended and modernised in different ways, however, it still held lots of historic architect, such as the engravement on the stone walls.
We were served a delicious lunch of jacket potato and salads and a white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake which everyone enjoyed! Then we headed to the World Peace Cafe and grabbed a hot drink. Pet sat with us during our lunch, it was at this point where she said how the building was ran by volunteers and that people from all over the world come to visit and volunteer here.
After our lunch we had a tour of the gardens at Thornby Hall. We spoke with the nun who lives at there and grew many different beautiful flowers in the greenhouse. She also grew some vegetables which she would give to the kitchen and the fresh produce would be used to cook their meals.
At the end of the day, we returned to the meditation room. Pet told us about Buddhism and the meaning behind different Buddha statues. One that stuck out was that many Buddha’s are sat on top of a lotus flower. This represented enlightenment as a lotus flower begins off growing in the mud but emerges out the water with a colourful bloom. We were able to use art as a way to relax, some of us traced images of Buddha and others coloured Buddha pictures.
The day was very peaceful but we learnt a lot about meditation and the history behind the building. Everyone said how relaxed they found the experience and how much they would love to come back!”
Are you, or is anyone you know, trained in any form of complimentary Therapy? Such as Reiki, Reflexology etc.
At Bridge we are always looking to provide various sessions for our members that can be of help to them during their recovery, We are also looking for hairdressers in the Northampton area. If you would be interested in getting involved then please get in touch with us via email at
